Baby on the way? Sounds like an exciting (and hectic) time to us! Both you and your spouse must be patiently awaiting the little one’s arrival. Until then, there is a lot to be done; from decorating the baby’s room to updating your NJ homeowners insurance. It is also time to start baby-proofing your home! The last thing you need is an accident or injury once the baby arrives.

Here are a few helpful reminders for those who are ready to start baby-proofing:

•    Replace all glass items and furniture pieces in your home. Anything with sharp edges and corners should be covered, too!

•    Tie and conceal any electrical cords that are lying around.

•    Invest in baby gates to keep your child from crawling their way into off-limits territory. Your little tot will be walking before you know it!

•    Make sure all small pieces are off of floor. Anything that looks like a potential choking hazard must be picked up!

•    If your home has hardwood floors, it may be a good idea to invest in some area rugs.

•    Make sure the crib you have purchased meets safety standards and is set up correctly. Do NOT put soft pillows, heating pads, or even stuffed animals in the crib!

•    Keep houseplants out of reach.

•    Cover electrical outlets in your home with plugs.

•    Screen off the fireplace.

•    Secure all bookshelves, bureaus and other heavy-duty furniture.

As you can see, baby-proofing your home is going to take time and effort but these things must be done! Another great way to keep your growing family protected is to update your NJ homeowners insurance. As your family continues to expand, so will your coverage. Be sure to speak with one of our insurance agents about these changes so we can help you update where needed. Once all of these tasks are completed, you can fully enjoy your new life ahead with your new addition!
